Demographics are an important element of audience research, it is a way of categorising potential viewers, they are often done by emails or electronic questionnaires to make it easy and convient to fill in, as many people would not spend to time to fill it out.
It then gives the producer categories of who to target the marketing campaign at, primarily, secondary and teriary. This then gives three levels of audience to appeal to the biggest audience. For example 'The Croods' is a family film, at a PG rating, however it is a comedy that is understood by the very young and old and of different cultures as it is visual, although dominantly a child film, isviewed by adolescence and older generation.
